Crispy Tofu (Oil Free, Vegan)

Whenever we go out I love to get a tofu dish from our favorite Chinese restaurant. After going out and being discouraged by the amount of oil used in most tofu dishes at restaurants, I decided that I would find a way to make a crispy tofu without the use of oil. I love using this recipe to make tofu that I can then toss in a teriyaki or orange glaze sauce. I always use an oil free sauce, and will have some recipes that I love to use coming out very soon. In this recipe I normally use whole wheat flour, but you can most certainly use oat flour as a great gluten free option. This tofu goes great with rice and vegetables or in a teriyaki stir fry. You can also use this recipe and just enjoy the pieces of tofu dipped in your favorite sauces as an appetizer.

Here's what you will need!

  • 12 oz package of firm or extra firm tofu

  • 1/3 cup of whole wheat flour or oat flour (GF)

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • Large bowl

  • Oven


  1. Open package of tofu and drain the water, but do not press the tofu (we want to keep the moisture in and around the tofu)

  2. Cut the tofu into 1/4" pieces

  3. Mix together the dry spices and flour

  4. In a large bowl toss the tofu pieces with the flour and spices

  5. Toss until all of the tofu has been covered by the flour mixture

  6. Place onto a silicon baking mat or on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper

  7. Bake at 375 F for 30-40 minutes in the oven (checking at 30 minutes) until the tofu has a crispy exterior
